Time to Celebrate! October is Women’s Small Business Month

This week, the website Black Girl Nerds shared an article highlighting Women’s Small Business Month every October as a time to recognize the innovation, resilience, and significant economic contribution of women entrepreneurs in the U.S. Women-owned businesses are a fast-growing segment, accounting for nearly half of all small businesses and generating millions of jobs. And the medical aesthetic field is incredibly unique in that women make up at least 80% of ownership, 80% of employees, and 90% of patients!

Despite this success, the article points out persistent systemic challenges, particularly for Black women. The main hurdles include limited access to capital (often receiving smaller loans at higher rates) and a lack of access to crucial mentorship and business development networks needed for scaling.

The month serves as a call to action to close these gaps. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is actively involved, offering funding, counseling, and training. Beyond government support, the article stresses the vital role of community engagement—consumers should intentionally shop with and amplify women-owned brands, while corporations and investors must increase funding equity and open up market access.

Ultimately, the month is about both celebration and commitment: honoring current trailblazers while inspiring and nurturing the next generation, recognizing that supporting women entrepreneurs strengthens the entire economy and leads to a more equitable future.
