The Hidden Dangers of IV Hydration Spas

IV hydration spas are a popular trend, offering vitamin infusions for promised benefits like energy, detox, or immune support. However, experts warn that the science doesn’t back up these claims.

A study in JAMA Internal Medicine this week found that this billion-dollar industry operates with almost no regulation and little medical evidence. Dr. Peter Lurie, a study co-author, emphasized that these businesses are operating “almost completely without evidence,” creating a “real danger to consumers.”

Risks and Regulation

  • Lack of Oversight: There are no federal regulations or national safety standards for these operations. Only 32 of 50 states have any rules, and just four (Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Vermont) were found to have “comprehensive oversight.”
  • Safety Concerns: Lurie voiced concerns that people are wasting money on treatments that won’t work and that they risk “adverse effects.” These risks include infection, allergic reactions, and contamination, especially when IVs are administered by untrained providers.
  • Practicing Medicine: Many spa owners may not realize they are practicing medicine; however, by putting a needle in someone’s vein, this is, by definition, practicing medicine.

Deceptive Practices

The researchers conducted an analysis of 255 clinic websites and a “secret shopper” investigation:

  • Vague Claims: Over half of the websites advertised treatments with vague claims, like using magnesium for headaches, and only two sites cited any scientific sources. None mentioned risks.
  • Poor Protocol: When researchers posed as customers, more than 85% of clinics recommended specific IV cocktails for symptoms like fatigue or colds, often without asking about medical history.
  • No Consultation: Only 1 in 4 clinics required a medical consultation beforehand, and less than 25% warned about possible side effects.
