Microsoft Unveils AI Health Tool That Can Read Medical Records

Microsoft is expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities with the introduction of Copilot Health, a tool designed to provide users with tailored medical insights and health management support.

Integrated as a dedicated tab within the existing Copilot app, the tool allows users to opt-in to sharing their personal health information. By analyzing medical histories, lab results, clinical notes, and data from wearables like the Apple Watch or Fitbit, the AI can offer specific guidance rather than general information. For those who prefer not to share their data, the chatbot remains capable of answering general health-related queries.

Given the sensitivity of medical data, Microsoft has implemented several layers of protection:

  • Identity Verification: Users must confirm who they are through the “Clear” verification system.
  • Secure Data Handling: Records are retrieved via HealthEx, which adheres to federal data-sharing standards.
  • Encryption: Medical data is encrypted and kept entirely separate from standard Copilot chat histories.
  • User Control: Users maintain the right to manage or delete their data at any time.

Microsoft CEO of AI, Mustafa Suleyman, emphasized that the company is taking a “deliberate” and “meticulous” approach to ensure safety and accuracy. The system was developed in collaboration with over 230 physicians and is initially launching in the United States through a phased rollout.

The move comes as Microsoft looks to increase its market share in the consumer AI sector, where it currently trails OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. With health already being the most frequently searched topic on the Copilot app, Microsoft hopes this personalized feature will attract a loyal user base. While currently free to use during the rollout, the company has indicated plans to move toward a paid subscription model in the future.
